Raised in the quiet embrace of her Deaf grandmother in the humble province of Bicol, young Maya learns to understand the language of love spoken not in words but in gestures. And now, she sets out to honor the woman whose silent strength shaped her world.
Kumpas is a 3D animated short film, a project in collaboration between KWATROOP and Kakamay Movement. The short film tells the heartfelt story of a Deaf grandmother and her hearing granddaughter, expressing their bond through Filipino Sign Language (FSL), emotional visuals, and expressive storytelling. Guided by Kakamay Movement's mission to uplift the marginalized Deaf community, Kumpas was created with inclusivity and empathy at its core. It uses a combination of color cues, lighting, and sound design to make the narrative accessible and meaningful for both Deaf and hearing audiences. Through this film, the project aims to bridge communication gaps, promote FSL, and celebrate the power of connection beyond words.
